Corten steel, also called weathering steel, forms a stable, rust-like patina that protects it from further corrosion. It’s strong, long-lasting, and perfect for outdoor art.
All pieces are sent out with an early rust patina developed, however this will continue to develop over the first few weeks and months outside.
Yes. During early weathering, runoff can stain nearby surfaces like concrete or stone. We recommend placing your piece in soil or using a drip tray.
Yes! Corten steel looks great inside and outside. Many of the birds look great on a window sill or a shelf and the plant stakes are perfect for indoor pot plants. Care should be taken with the placement of pieces with early rust patinas as they may continue to oxidise indoors and have the potential to stain surfaces.
No special care is needed. Corten is low-maintenance—just allow it to weather naturally. In salty areas, a coat of penetrol painted on every 6 months can reduce the weathering of the steel and increase longevity. Sealants may be used to cover the sculpture but are not necessary.
